Network Engineering & Technology
Mission
NET's mission is to provide reliable, consistent and effective communications throughout
George Mason University's data, voice, and video networks and to evaluate and implement
new networking technologies that support and enhance the goals of the University.
Goals for 2007/2008
- Enhance the current network management system to provide more effective monitoring and
control of the University's network infrastructure. Increase the system's capability and
provide network support staff with the means to securely access key network management
applications from any location.
- Develop an affordable, effective, and manageable firewall architecture suitable for the
protection of individual labs and subnetworks.
- Implement Voice over IP (VoIP) as a means of providing full campus telephony and
voicemail functions to remote sites in a cost-effective manner.
- Identify deficiencies in current networking equipment maintenance contracts and develop
an appropriate corrective action plan.
- Continue to work with faculty, the Internet2, and National Lambda Rail organizations to explore advanced
networking services and capabilities that support the needs of a broad range of academic
research and collaborative activities, in the arts and humanities as well as the
sciences.
- Increase our participation with state and regional networking initiatives and seek out
partnerships with local industries and academic groups that will strengthen our
technological resources and increase our benefit to the Northern Virginia region.
