Enterprise Servers and Operations Mission and Goals

Mission

To acquire, install, implement, maintain and operate enterprise servers and systems for administrative support, academic research, academic instruction, and electronic messaging. Department activities include 24 X 7 data-center operation, administrative production control, systems engineering, systems administration, data-file backups and restores, systems security, electronic-mail processing, and disaster recovery.

Goals

  • Provide quality systems engineering, systems administration, and computer operations support for the new administrative, central academic, electronic messaging, and legacy enterprise systems.

  • Acquire and implement a new SUN Enterprise database server in order to adequately support the Student Information System (Banner).

  • Consolidate servers where appropriate and cost effective while maintaining systems security and optimal performance.

  • Upgrade the MEMO Messaging Server in order to provide enhanced functionality.

  • Leverage systems management techniques in order to proactively monitor and analyze performance problems, bottlenecks, or subsystem failures on mission critical enterprise servers.

  • Complete the upgrade of the mason cluster in order to improve supportability and performance of central-facility servers for academic support.

  • Develop a preliminary plan, including concept of operation, for the proposed disaster recovery site at Prince William IIIa.

  • Develop a three-year plan for ES&O highlighting concept of operations. The plan will include proposed staffing and training requirements.
