Enterprise Servers and Operations

Mission

To acquire, install, implement, maintain and operate enterprise servers and systems for administrative support, academic research/instruction, and electronic messaging. Department activities include 24 X 7 data-center operation, administrative production control, systems engineering, systems administration, date-file backups & restores, systems security, electronic-mail processing, and disaster recovery.

Goals

  • Improve supportability and performance of central-facility servers for academic support

    • Partition the Hitachi 7700E storage array to provide /home disk storage (200 GB) for the mason cluster thereby replacing slower unsupported disk (SW800 & SW300 arrays). This upgrade increases the reliability and speed of disk I/O on the mason cluster. This goal is congruent with the 2007 university plan by providing a better performing, more stable centralized computing environment for faculty research.

  • Improve supportability and performance of central-facility servers for administrative support

    • Provide systems engineering support for the Patriot Project (SUN-SCT Banner) including requirements analysis, acquisition, installation, and systems administration. The current FRS/HRS server 'pinta' (HP-UX) will be retired after FRS and HRS both go into production.

  • Complete the implementation of MEMO and install enhancements to the existing system

    • Complete the initial implementation of MEMO to include migration of the remaining departments, affiliates, and university guests.

    • Plan and implement the first phase of software upgrades for the MEMO system to include a new calendar server with search capability and the addition of personal address-books for the web version of Messaging Server.

    • Plan and implement the retirement of Group Wise to include removal of the software from all Novell file servers.
